The Tohoku University Tohoku Medical Megabank (TMM) Project has completed data acquisition for whole-genome analysis for 100,000 of the approximately 150,000 general Japanese population who participated in the cohort study under the TMM project. Since the completion of the first whole genome analysis of 1,000 people in August 2015, we have gradually increased the number of people analyzed and have reached the scale of 100,000 people.
Large-scale whole genome analyses of several hundred thousand to one million people are being promoted around the world, but until now it has not been such a large-scale whole genome analyses in Japan. With the completion, TMM data have become one of the world's leading large-scale whole genome analyses of the general population, following the UK Biobank and the All of US. We have performed whole genome analysis on the general population through various ingenious and cutting-edge attempts.

For this achievement, we follow a government plan and a consortium of five pharmaceutical companies, established in March 2021, has significantly support us. It is expected to contribute to innovative drug discovery and other diverse research and development in the future.
Out of 100,000 whole genome analyses, the Japanese Whole Genome Reference Panel using from 85,000 individuals will be made available this fall.
