Promoting community health service development in the Tohoku region through the ToMMo Clinical Fellowship

    News: 2012/10/01

Tohoku University's Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (ToMMo) in Sendai, Japan, has established a "ToMMo Clinical Fellowship" program. This special rotation was designed to train physicians who will support the community medical health in cooperation with the Tohoku University Hospital and the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine.

Under the program, ToMMo clinical fellows will spend part of a year as designated community health care providers and the remaining period for conducting research and other activities at Tohoku University. This will address the urgent need to dispatch physicians to local areas on a rotation basis.

Last October 1, 2012, nine physicians were appointed as ToMMo clinical fellows, and since then, four physicians have assumed their posts as health care providers in Minamisanriku Town, and Onagawa Town in Miyagi Prefecture. These areas situated along the Pacific Coast suffered catastrophic damage from the tsunami due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. The shortage of physicians was a severe problem in these calamity stricken vicinities.

By developing this educational program to make physicians highly experienced, Tohoku University aims to transform existing community medical health structures into more robust and sustainable systems.

Note (2013 Jan.): In the working period at community health care providers, ToMMo clinical fellows also assist long-term health study which will be conducted by ToMMo.
